Where work is considered to be high risk, such as during construction projects, maintenance work, equipment installation and refurbishment, strict controls are required. The work must be carried out against previously agreed safety procedures known as a ‘permit-to-work’ system. The permit-to-work is a documented procedure that authorises certain people (who) to carry out specific work (what) within a specified time frame (when). It sets out the precautions required to complete the work safely (how), based on a risk assessment.
Permits-to-work have been in existence for decades and form an important means of fulfilling an organisation’s general duty to ensure the health and safety of employees under section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. They have typically been paper documents, but over the past 10 years have increasingly become web-based.
ePermits is the UK’s first and leading web-based permit-to-work software system. Developed by Banyard Solutions just over 17 years ago, it emulates organisations’ existing permit-to-work regimes but automates processes including competence checks, scenario management, communication, clash checks and documentation, raising alerts when an issues needs to be resolved for work to proceed.
In June of 2020, Banyard Solutions was acquired by Alcumus, a leading provider of risk management solutions. Banyard Solutions will work closely with Alyn Franklin, CEO of Alcumus, to reinforce our commitment to ensuring worker safety through work authorisation and permit-to-work. Being part of the Alcumus family enables our clients to complete the digitalisation of all their safety processes and workflows, further reducing their risk profiles and driving business growth.
ePermits has had a major societal impact over the past ten years, saving numerous people’s lives, reducing incidents and ensuring that more contractors, employees, visitors and members of the general public go home safe every day. ePermits have numerous benefits: personal, financial, organisational and societal. They keep people safe when undertaking potentially dangerous work, or being around people who are undertaking such work, while also reducing the risk of damage to property, disruption to business and compromised security.
The establishment and development of ePermits as an industry standard tool over the past ten years, which has been imitated several times, has enabled proper implementation of onsite health and safety systems and processes and has had a profound impact on both the safety of workers and the improvement in business continuity.

Wherever possible, we select products made from environmentally friendly resources. We also encourage suppliers to adopt the highest environmental standards.
We encourage our customers to use email and online facilities through our management processes, and to receive their reports and account summaries by email to cut down on unnecessary paper use.
We choose to source our electricity and gas from suppliers committed to switching to a lower carbon economy.
We are developing specific annual environmental objectives and targets to ensure we are constantly improving our environmental performance, and so we can measure these improvements.
We ensure that this policy is communicated to all persons working for or on behalf of Banyard Solutions, to ensure we are all working towards the same objectives and that our environmental commitments are filtered through every level of our staff, supply chain and customers.
